Contact with the estate
What is the best way to contact you with questions?
The best is to e-mail us at kylesmorar@live.co.uk. You are more than likely to find the phone unattended, but we will respond to messages left on 07595020575.
If someone needs to contact me during my stay, how could they do that?
By using the above e-mail address or phone number. Unfortunately we do not have someone at the computer/phone during all office hours. If, for some reason, you would need to be contactable 24/7 please contact us before your holiday to see what we could arrange.
Travel Arrangements
Where is the long stay car park in Mallaig?
As you drive into Mallaig you will see the car park to your left.
Why do we need to contact the Western Isles to confirm the ferry trip?
Why do we need to contact the Western Isles to confirm the ferry trip?
How far is it from the train station to the ferry?
A 2-3 minute walk.
How do we get from the ferry to the cottages?
The ferry sails to Tarbet Bay; part of Nevis Estate on which the cottages are situated. All the estate's boats are moored in this bay where we transfer guests for the Post Office, Bothy and Old School House from the ferry to one of the estate boats. From there you have a short trip to the Kylesmorar pier, by boat. On arrival at the pier there is still no need to carry your luggage as we have a quad with a trailer, as well as a temperamental Land Rover, to assist with this. The Wee House guests disembark in Tarbet. The ferry's staff transfer you onto a dinghy that drops you off in Tarbet.
What if we cannot make the ferry to the estate or need to leave earlier than the ferry's departure time?
Contact us to make alternate arrangements.
I am confused about the ferry times; please explain.
The ferry sails from Monday to Friday from May to September. In April and October the sailings are only on Mondays and Fridays.
You would need to be in Mallaig for 14:00 to catch the ferry that leaves for Tarbet at 14:15 on the day of your arrival. On the day of departure we take you from the estate to Inverie as the ferry's morning sail does not go as far as Tarbet. We will leave the cottages at 10:00 to be in Inverie for 11:00. You should be back in Mallaig for 11:45, give or take a few minutes.
If you are planning to arrive or depart at times that cannot work with the scheduled ferry times; please contact us about other possibilities. We do, however, ask that guests try to stick to the scheduled times.
Food
Can we restock our supplies during the week?
Yes. If you contact the Co-operative in Mallaig before 10:00 on any morning (or the day before) that the ferry sails to Tarbet, they will accept a credit card payment for your food supplies and send it to you with the ferry's afternoon sail.
What does the estate supply in terms of food?
All food supplied to our guests is subject to availability. Estate staff will tell you what is available for your stay on your arrival. We will usually provide enough meat for a meal for your party. Freezers might have all or some of the following: pork, venison and lamb.
If and when our hens do lay eggs, guests are welcome to use them.
We do have a kitchen garden on the estate. Estate staff will tell you on arrival if any veg is available for you to use.
Feel free to contact us within a week of your arrival if you would like to know what might be available during your stay.
General
Can we use one of the estate boats on our visit?
Subject to availability we will consider lending a boat to guests that have a certificate to prove that they are able to handle boats. We ask that you pay for the petrol used, but do not charge a rental fee.
Do we need to arrange a day out in advance?
If you are just planning to stick to the loch there is no need to arrange in advance as your stay includes a drop-off/pick-up by us; we'll confirm the arrangements when you are here. If you wanted to charter a boat privately; we suggest that you arrange that in advance.
Can we go fishing on the estate boats during our stay?
This is a possibility, but dependant on how busy the estate employees are on your visit. They occasionally fish in their spare time and might invite you to join them if they have any fishing planned. There are some spots that are good for fishing from the shore as well.
Do you have freezer facilities?
The Old Post Office has no freezer facilities. The Bothy has a fridge-freezer and the Wee House has a very small fridge with a freezer compartment.
Do you have laundry facilities?
No.
Can we swim in the loch?
You are welcome to try; it has been done. We suggest that you use a wetsuit and keep an eye out for jelly fish.
Could we bring kayaks on to the ferry?
Yes.
